There are many scholarships and grants offered by the State of Minnesota. Some of the awards are based on merit while others are centered on financial need. The list below is an overview of college and university scholarships available from the Minnesota Office of Higher Education.
Before applying for scholarships, it’s important to read eligibility requirements carefully. In addition to being a Minnesota resident, most of the prizes below will require students to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This is a federal program, but it may qualify you for options like the Pell Grant.
If you’re hoping to win money for school, you should also expand your search beyond government grants and scholarships. There are many private scholarships and school-specific awards for Minnesota college students, too. You can start a search for scholarships of these types by asking your school counselor, college financial aid office, or by using a scholarship database.
Here is a list of scholarships and need-based grants offered by the State of Minnesota.
Minnesota Scholarship Programs
MN Academic Excellence Scholarship
The Minnesota Academic Excellence Scholarship helps students who have demonstrated outstanding ability, achievement, and potential in one of several subjects: English or creative writing, fine arts, foreign language, math, science, or social science.
To be eligible, students must apply in their high school senior year. They must also be admitted to an eligible program of study at a post-secondary school in Minnesota. The value of this award varies annually.
Minnesota Indian Scholarship
The Minnesota Indian Scholarship Program provides post-secondary financial assistance to eligible Minnesota residents who demonstrate financial need for an award. To be eligible for this award, students must be one-fourth or more American Indian ancestry OR an enrolled member or citizen of a federally-recognized American Indian tribe or Canadian First Nation.
The annual award amount is up to $4,000 per academic year for undergraduate students and up to $6,000 per academic year for graduate students.
Minnesota Grant Programs
Minnesota State Grant
The Minnesota State Grant program help students from low- and moderate-income families pay for educational expenses at eligible Minnesota colleges or universities. This program has many eligibility requirements so be sure to read all terms and conditions.
The grant ranges about $7,845 at a public two-year college to $12,345 at a private four-year college. The average award is approximately $2,603. The minimum award is $100 per year.
Minnesota Future Together Grants
The Minnesota Future Together Grant provides eligible Minnesotans with a tuition-free pathwayfor earning a certificate, diploma, associate’s degree, or bachelor’s degree at any public institution in the state. The grants are available starting spring 2022 through 2024 OR until all funds are dispensed, whichever comes first.
This program has lengthy eligibility criteria so be sure to read all terms and conditions.
Child Care Grant
The Postsecondary Child Care Grant Program helps low income students who have young children pay for child care while the student attends classes.
This grant is available to students in Minnesota who have a child 12 years old or younger. Family size and income requirements are also part of the terms and conditions of this aid.
The award offers up to $6,500 per academic year.
Minnesota Student Teacher Grants
The Minnesota Student Teacher Grants provides post-secondary financial assistance to eligible students enrolled in Minnesota teacher preparation programs. Two grants are awarded for this program:
- The Minnesota Student Teachers in Shortage Areas Grant is for those who intend to teach in a license shortage area or rural school district after graduating.
- The Minnesota Underrepresented Student Teacher Grant provides postsecondary financial assistance to eligible students who belong to a racial or ethnic group underrepresented in the Minnesota teacher workforce.
This grant awards undergraduate and graduate students up to $7,500 for one term.
Grants for Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
In an effort to provide students with intellectual and developmental disabilities with financial assistance for tuition and fees, the Minnesota Legislature established the Grants for Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (ID Grant) program.
For this prize, a student must attend Bethel University, Central Lakes College, or Ridgewater Community College. The value of this award varies annually.
Minnesota Veterans’ Dependents Assistance Program
The Minnesota Veterans’ Dependents Assistance Program provides tuition assistance at most Minnesota colleges and universities to dependents of persons considered to be prisoners of war or persons missing in action — as defined by the Department of Defense — after August 1, 1958.
Students can receive tuition and fee assistance up to a maximum of $250 per year at Minnesota private colleges or universities.
Minnesota Educational Assistance for War Orphans
The Minnesota Educational Assistance for War Orphans program offers financial aid to children of deceased veterans. Students may qualify for free tuition at the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities.
In addition, students may receive up to $750 a year from the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs for tuition, books, supplies, and room and board.
Alliss Opportunity Grant Program for Adults Returning to College
Two Year College program
The Alliss Two-Year Opportunity Grant is available to Minnesota students with financial need. The prize is for those attending Minnesota State Colleges, and who are enrolled in A.A., A.S., A.A.S., A.F.A., diplomas, certificates and MnTC courses designed to transfer to baccalaureate programs.
Grants are offered in amounts between $350 and $1,100 per year.
University Grant Program
The Alliss University Grant is available to full-time undergraduate students with financial need who attend a Minnesota State Universities.
