How to Win Scholarships and Grants – State of Utah

The State of Utah offers several scholarships and grants for students. These financial aid programs are administered by the Utah System of Higher Education. You can find descriptions and relevant links for these programs below.

Of course, before applying for scholarships, there are important items to consider. Most notably, all scholarships have their own eligibility requirements. Be sure to read and understand these terms so that your application isn’t disqualified immediately. Also, most state-funded scholarship and grant programs say that students need to submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is used to determine your eligibility for federal financial aid. However, it’s also used by states to determine your eligibility for prizes based on financial need.

Whether you’re a graduating high school senior or a current college student, it makes sense to apply for scholarships. So, let’s get to some prizes that can help you pay for the cost of college.

Utah Scholarship Programs

Opportunity Scholarship

The Opportunity Scholarship is open to high school students who complete advanced-level courses. To be eligible for this award, students must apply during their high school senior year. There are other conditions, too. For example, recipients must graduate from a Utah high school and earn a 3.3 cumulative high school GPA. An advanced high school course must also be completed in three core academic areas: math, science, and language arts.

Students can recieve up to $1,000 per semester for up to four semesters.

Utah Promise Scholarship

The Utah Promise Scholarship offers financial assistance to students to increase access to higher education. To receive this award, students must demonstrate financial need. Scholarship funds can be used at public Utah colleges or universities, including technical colleges. The award is also available for students attending private Utah colleges, including: Brigham Young University (Provo), Ensign College, Western Governors University, and Westminster College.

Award amounts vary, but may cover tuition costs and fees for two years. To apply, applicants must contact their financial aid office.

T.H. Bell Education Scholarship Program

The T.H. Bell Education Scholarship Program helps first-generation Utah students enter high-need fields, with a particular focus on teaching.  Recipients of this scholarship award must study in an approved education program. Additionally, funds can be used at all public or private Utah institutions with an approved program of study. Approved programs are offered at Brigham Young University, Dixie State University, Salt Lake Community College, Snow College, Southern Utah University, University of Utah, Utah State University, Utah Valley University, Weber State University, Western Governors University, and Westminster College.

The scholarship may cover the cost of tuition, fees, and books for up to four academic years.

Technical College Scholarships

The Technical Education Scholarship provides financial assistance to students pursuing a technical education certificate in high demand industries. This scholarship is available to students enrolled in high-demand programs at Utah’s technical colleges and recently graduated high school students.

Scholarship funds may cover tuition, program fees, and books for one year.

Utah Regents Scholarship and New Century Scholarship

The Utah Regents Scholarship and New Century Scholarship were merit-based awards that are no longer offered in Utah. The funds from these programs were reallocated to other scholarships or grants. The change occurred as state representatives saw a need to move academic achievement awards to those offered for financial need. The move will help many students afford the cost of attending a Utah college.

Utah Grant Programs

Higher Education Success Stipend Program

The Higher Education Success Stipend Program is a grant offered for undergraduate study at a Utah private non-profit or state college, university, or technical college. Grants are awarded based on financial need.

Award amounts vary. To apply, students must contact their institution’s financial aid office.

Veterans Tuition Gap Program

The Veterans Tuition Gap Program helps military veterans complete a bachelor’s degree. It pays up to tuition, plus fees and books, at Utah public and private non-profit colleges, universities, and technical colleges.

Award amounts vary. To apply, students must contact their institution’s financial aid office.

Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) Professional Student Exchange Program (PSEP)

The Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) Professional Student Exchange Program (PSEP) helps Utah residents attend out-of-state optometry and podiatry programs. These are areas of study not currently available at Utah institutions. Offered financial aid allows students to pay reduced tuition at participating schools.
