How to Win Scholarships and Grants – State of Rhode Island

The State of Rhode Island offers a few college scholarship and grant programs. Scholarship funds are administered by the Rhode Island Department of Education. Below, we offer a list of these scholarship and grant opportunities with links.

Before spending time on applications, it’s important to understand various types of scholarships and their eligibility requirements. For the most part, the programs below are based on merit or financial need. One common criteria for state scholarships is the completion of a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is used to determine your eligibility for federal financial aid. However, it’s also used by states to determine your level of financial need.

Scholarships and grants are a great way to help pay for the cost of college. Winning these opportunities can help you graduate debt-free, but they can also help elevate your career opportunities. So, let’s get to the prizes!

Rhode Island Scholarship Programs

Rhode Island Promise Scholarship

The Rhode Island Promise Scholarship is a “last-dollar scholarship” that fills in the gap between other aid, like Pell grants, and the actual costs of tuition and mandatory fees. Many students work extra hours or look to loan programs to fill this gap. The last-dollar scholarship is designed to help students stay on the path to earning a postsecondary degree without taking on mountains of student debt.

There are no extra forms to fill out for this scholarship, only the FAFSA form that is required for federal student aid programs like Pell. The funds are distributed directly to the Community College of Rhode Island and are applied to the student’s bill for tuition and mandatory fees.

To be eligible, students must be Rhode Island residents. Additionally, applicants must be recent high school graduates (or currently a high school senior) or GED recipients and under 19 years of age.

Presidential Scholars – RI

The Rhode Island Department of Education administers the Presidential Scholars Program. The process requires that Rhode Island high school students get nominated by their institution and/or principal.
