The State of Wisconsin offers many financial aid programs for higher education. Wisconsin residents who are high school seniors or currently college or university students can apply to these programs to help with the cost of college.
Wisconsin’s scholarship and grant programs are administered by the Higher Educational Aids Board (HEAB). To help connect you with these financial aid options, we’ve included a list below along with relevant links.
It’s important to know that to be eligible for Wisconsin state financial aid, a student must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Be a resident of Wisconsin
- Have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent
- Be enrolled in an undergraduate degree or certificate program
- Be attending a non-profit college or university based in Wisconsin
- If you are a male student, you must register with the United States Selective Service System (SSS)
Another important point to know is that the grant programs listed below each have a financial need component – the scholarship prizes do not have this criteria. Financial need is determined by personal and/or family income statements. For this reason, students hoping to qualify for a Wisconsin grant must complete a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).
Of course, all grants and scholarships are not identical and they may have additional terms and conditions. This is why it’s good practice to read these items carefully.

Wisconsin Scholarship Programs
Academic Excellence Scholarship
The Academic Excellence Scholarships (AES) are awarded to Wisconsin high school seniors with the highest grade point averages at each public and private high school within the State of Wisconsin. To receive this college scholarship, a student must be enrolled full-time at a participating University of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Technical College, or an independent institution in the academic year after winning this prize.
There is no application for this scholarship, but students must be nominated by their high school based on GPA.
This scholarship is valued at $2,250 per year, which is applied toward tuition.
Technical Excellence Scholarship
The Technical Excellence Scholarship (TES) is awarded to high school seniors with the highest level of proficiency in technical education subjects. TES prizes must be used within the Wisconsin Technical College System.
To be eligible for this scholarship, students must meet terms and conditions set by HEAB and be nominated by their high school.
The value of this award is $2,250 per year, which is applied to tuition.
Wisconsin Grant Programs
Wisconsin Grant – University of Wisconsin System, Technical Colleges, Tribal Colleges
The Wisconsin Grant Program provides grant assistance to undergraduate, Wisconsin residents enrolled at least half-time in degree or certificate programs at University of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Technical College, and Tribal institutions. Awards are based on financial need as determined by the FAFSA.
The minimum award amount is $250 while the maximum is $3,150.
Wisconsin Grant – Private Non-Profit Schools
The Wisconsin Grant (WG-PNP) Program provides financial assistance to undergraduates enrolled at least half-time in degree or certificate programs at non-profit, independent colleges or universities based in Wisconsin. Awards are based on financial need as determined by the FAFSA.
Minimum and maximum amounts for this financial aid program vary annually. However, the minimum is $250.
Talent Incentive Program Grant
The Talent Incentive Program (TIP) Grant provides assistance to the most financially needy and educationally disadvantaged Wisconsin students attending colleges and universities in the state. First-time freshmen students are nominated for the TIP Grant by school financial aid offices or by counselors of the Wisconsin Educational Opportunity Programs (WEOP). To continue to receive the TIP Grant, students must continue to show financial need. Awards are based on financial need as determined by the FAFSA.
This grant is valued from $600 to $1,800.
Indian Student Assistance Grant
The Indian Student Assistance Grant is awarded to students who are at least 25% Native American and are undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in degree or certificate programs at University of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Technical College, independent colleges and universities, tribal colleges, or proprietary institutions based in Wisconsin. Awards are based on financial need as determined by the FAFSA and the Indian Student Assistance Grant Application.
The value of this grant ranges between $250 to $1,100.
Minority Undergraduate Retention Grant
The Minority Undergraduate Retention Grant is for minority undergraduates who are not in first year. According to the statutes, a minority student is defined as a student who is either an African American; American Indian; Hispanic; or Southeast Asian from Laos, Cambodia, or Vietnam admitted to the U. S. after December 31, 1975. Awards are based on financial need as determined by the FAFSA and requires nomination by the student’s financial aid office.
The total grant amount ranges from $250 to $2,500.
Hearing/Visually Impaired Student Grant
The Hearing/Visually Impaired Student Grant provides financial aid for Wisconsin college students who show financial need and have a severe or profound hearing or visual impairment.
This grant offers students between $250 to $1,800.
