Each of these scholarship programs has a different set of eligibility requirements and deadlines so it’s important to research them thoroughly. Keep in mind, some scholarships are strictly open to high school students, while others are open only to current undergraduate students. There may be other restrictions based on financial need or merit, too. For this reason, it’s important to know whether you qualify for a prize before investing time into an application.

1. Explore America Travel Scholarship
Due Date: February 21, 2023
Amount: $1,500 travel stipend + accommodations
About the award from the scholarship donor: While many young Americans have travel aspirations, we know not everyone has the financial means to get out and start exploring. That’s why we created the Explore America scholarship. Each year, we award Explore America recipients with a travel stipend, 4-7 free nights at a participating HI USA hostel of their choice, and pre-travel workshops to help them prepare for life-changing adventures.
Eligibility Requirements:
Eligible applicants for general Explore America awards must:
- be 18-30 years old
- be United States citizens, residents, or green card holders, or qualify under DACA
- be able to demonstrate financial need
- Students must be pursuing a degree at a community college or university
2. The Annual Venus Morris Griffin Scholarship Fund
Due Date: February 15, 2023
Amount: $10,000
About the award from the scholarship donor: It started with hardship. After overcoming a life of trials and tribulations, Venus Morris Griffin established a scholarship fund to help children much like her own. A $10,000 annual scholarship fund was created to help deserving high school students with an incarcerated parent to ensure that nothing stops them from reaching their full potential. Since the inception of the scholarship fund, the goal grew to help more deserving individuals in need, and so the Venus Morris Griffin Foundation was born.
Eligibility Requirements:
- You MUST be a High School Senior in the United States
- You MUST have a biological parent that is currently incarcerated
- Students that are adopted and in foster care that meet all terms and conditions are encouraged to apply
- Student MUST prove acceptance into either an institution of higher learning or a trades program, by March 2023 – Payment shall be made directly to the institution
- Applicant MUST show proof of acceptance to attend college in the next one year and also provide an invoice issued by the institution
- Only one (1) entry letter allowed per person/household explaining how having an incarcerated parent has impacted your life
- All scholarship money MUST be used on tuition ONLY and within the first or second year of high school graduation
3. Dr. E.B. Henderson Essay Contest
Due Date: February 1, 2023
Amount: $3,000 for grand prize, $2,000 for second place, $1,000 for third place
About the award from the scholarship donor: Dr. E. B. Henderson was a true advocate and pioneer for African Americans. He was a sports historian, educator, administrator, coach, athlete, civil rights activist and is considered the “Grandfather of Black Basketball” as he was the first to introduce basketball to African Americans on a wide-scale organized basis in 1904 and organized the first African American athletic league in 1906, all in Washington, D.C. His passion was the education and advancement of his race, and he undoubtedly faced many adversities in the process.
To celebrate and honor his legacy, write a 350-word essay describing your passions/goals for the future and one of the biggest challenges you face in pursuing it. Open to all DMV-area high school seniors.
Eligibility Requirements:
Essay promotion (“Contest”) open to students residing within 75 miles of Capital One Arena located at 601 F Street, NW Washington, D.C. 20004 who are currently in grade 12, except employees and immediate family members (spouse, parents, siblings, and children) of employees of Monumental Sports and Entertainment, the National Basketball Association and its member teams, NBA Properties Inc., each of their respective parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, directors, owners, employees and agents, Sports & Entertainment Services, LLC, and Capital One Arena, Washington Bullets LP dba Washington Wizards (“Contest Entities”). In addition, this promotion is not open to any male or female who played or is currently playing for any high school or college basketball teams or any other competitive basketball program (e.g., an AAU team).
4. Dorothy Lemke Howarth Memorial Scholarship from the Society of Women Engineers – (Several Scholarships with February Deadlines)
Due Date: February 1, 2023
Amount: $4,500
About the award from the scholarship donor: SWE Scholarships support those who identify as a woman and pursue an ABET-accredited bachelor or graduate student program in preparation for careers in engineering, engineering technology, and fields related to engineering globally. In 2022, SWE disbursed 330 new and renewed scholarships valued at more than $1,700,000!

- Scholarship for women pursuing engineering
- Must be citizen of US
- Class: Sophomore
- Major: Any
5. 2023 Danone North America Gut Microbiome, Yogurt and Probiotics Fellowship Grant – February 2023
Due Date: February 14, 2023
Amount: Two prizes at $50,000 each
About the award from the scholarship donor: Danone North America, is awarding two graduate students a grant of $25,000 each. The successful candidates should excel in science and have an interest in studying the gut microbiome, probiotics and yogurt in human health and wellness (the “Field”). Applicants are encouraged to submit a proposal for a study that explores measures of human health and wellness. The grant is not designed for the investigation of disease treatment or clinical management and should focus on health and wellness, long-term health and longevity, growth and development, or performance. Such topics may include the role that probiotics or yogurt play on brain function, growth and development, digestive health, weight management or heart health; and factors, such as foods or nutrients, that influence the gut microbiome.
The award may be applied towards tuition or research-related projects or as otherwise allocated at Danone’s sole discretion. It will be payable directly to the student’s educational institution to support their continued education on related topics during 2023-2024 academic year.
Each candidate must meet the following requirements:
- Be an incoming, current and full-time enrolled graduate student, at least 18 years of age, studying in the Field (as defined above) during the 2022-2023 academic year at an accredited U.S. Institution.
- Be in good standing in the college or university, as well as major program of study. Confirmation letter from department chair, dean or institution’s graduate studies, registrar or admissions office required.
- Be a current U.S. citizen (proof of citizenship is required) or permanent U.S. resident (proof of residency is required).
- Upload completed application online within the allotted acceptance period December 13, 2022 to February 14, 2023. Includes:
- Written essays (questions provided below)
- Official transcript from current institution or immediate past university if an incoming graduate student
- CV or resume
- One letter of recommendation received from faculty member or advisor by February 14, 2023. Please have your faculty member or advisor submit letter of recommendation to cdeecken@pollock-pr.com.
- Utilization of grant funds must begin in the Fall Semester, 2023.
Student applications will be judged by an external committee based on:
- Strength of project proposal
- Relevance and feasibility of the project objectives, methodology and outcome measures
- Evidence of ability and resources to successfully complete proposed project
- Value to the Field (as defined above)
- Academic performance
- Letter of recommendation
6. Dr. Vicki L. Schechtman Scholarship
Due Date: February 28, 2023
Amount: $2,000
About the award from the scholarship donor: This scholarship of $2,000 will be awarded to a college undergraduate in her Freshman through Junior year whose field of study will be one of the sciences recognized by the National Science Foundation and continues Dr. Schechtman’s dreams of scientific progress.
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants will need to provide:
- Professional/Academic Goals Essay addressing the following (500-1,500 words):
- Your background
- Career/academic goals
- How this award will help you meet those career and educational objectives as they relate to STEM and the AWIS mission
- Resume/CV Intended use of funds
- Unofficial transcript
- Must be a woman currently enrolled in a US based college or university studying a field in the sciences
- Two recommendation questionnaires completed from a professor or advisor who is aware of your scientific ability and interests
7. Good Neighbor Pharmacy Scholarship Program
Due Date: February 28, 2023
Amount: $25,000, renewable up to three years
About the award from the scholarship donor: We know that pharmacies are often the most accessible form of healthcare in communities nationwide. But we have work to do to ensure we have more pharmacists in the field that are representative of the diverse communities and patients that are serviced by pharmacies each day. That is why it is extremely important to AmerisourceBergen, the AmerisourceBergen Foundation and Good Neighbor Pharmacy that we support greater diversity, equity and inclusion in the business and practice of pharmacy, especially within pharmacy ownership through this Good Neighbor Pharmacy Scholarship.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants to The Good Neighbor Pharmacy Scholarship must:
- Self-identify as Black or African American
- Be current college undergraduate or graduate students
- Plan to enroll or be enrolled in full-time graduate study, pursuing a Pharmacy Doctorate Degree at an accredited college/university for the entire upcoming academic year (preference will be given to applicants attending or planning to attend an HBCU)
- Undergraduate applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent)
- Current pharmacy doctorate students must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
- This prize is not open to high school seniors
- AmerisourceBergen employees and/or their children are ineligible to apply
8. 2023 IAPD College Scholarship Program
Due Date: February 24, 2023
Amount: $5,000
About the award from the scholarship donor: The IAPD Charitable Foundation was established in 1981 as a non-profit tax exempt corporation to provide scholarships at the undergraduate and graduate degree levels to employees of IAPD member firms and their children, as well as students enrolled in a professional sales program (major, minor or concentration).
Each year, worthy recipients are awarded up to US$5,000 to provide meaningful financial support for their college/university education.
The IAPD Annual Scholarship Program:
- Provides meaningful financial support for the education of worthy scholarship candidates.
- Benefits the business community through well-educated employees.
- Exposes scholarship candidates to the ever-expanding plastics industry.
- Strengthens IAPD through a direct link to education today.
Eligibility Requirements:
To apply for a IAPD scholarship, college/university students at the undergraduate or graduate degree level must meet one of the following criteria:
- Be employed by an IAPD member company
- Be a child of an employee of an IAPD member company
- Be enrolled in a professional sales program (major, minor or concentration), business, communications, marketing, engineering, supply chain management, information technology, accounting, human resources program or related programs.
- The IAPD scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors.
- Candidates must have a minimum of a 3.5 cumulative GPA based on a 4.0 scale. Students are ranked based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities and presentation.
9. National Association of Black Journalists – Larry Whiteside Scholarship
Due Date: February 27, 2023
Amount: $5,000
About the award from the scholarship donor: Larry Whiteside, a pioneer in the field of sports journalism, was the first African American beat sports writer for The Boston Globe. His achievements earned him many prestigious honors including induction into NABJ’s 2009 Hall of Fame (posthumous); NABJ’s 1999 Lifetime Achievement Award; induction into the 2008 National Baseball Hall of Fame (posthumous); and the 2008 J. G. Taylor Spink Award, posthumously given by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Mr. Whiteside passed away in 2007 due to complications from Parkinson’s disease. NABJ’s Sports Task Force established this scholarship in Mr. Whiteside’s honor to provide financial assistance to journalism students interested in sports journalism.
Eligibility Criteria:
– NABJ student member in good standing
– Must have an interest in pursuing a career in sports journalism
– Must be an undergraduate or graduate student with at least one year left in school at the time of the application and disbursement of funds at an accredited U.S. college or university
– Completion of the application including an essay on the topic, What inspires you to be a journalist?
– Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale) verified by an official transcript
– Completion of application requirements
10. WPOSC Military Dependent Child Scholarship

About the award from the scholarship donor: The Wright-Patterson Officers’ Spouses’ Club is awarding scholarships to honor and aid military dependent children and spouses of officer enlisted service members in our area who exemplify excellence in the classroom and in their local community.
Eligibility Requirements:
10.10.1 Applicants will be a dependent child or spouse of an active duty, retired, deceased,
prisoner of war (POW) or missing in action (MIA) U.S. Armed Forces (USAF) or
Reserve Component (RC) member who is affiliated or residing within 100 miles of
Wright Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) (affiliation may be sponsor’s work); or an
active duty international military dependent currently assigned to WPAFB and
residing within 100 miles of WPAFB; and
10.10.2 Applicants will be full-time undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited
college, university or technical school during the following academic year (fall and/or
spring term) with at least one full-time semester/quarter of credit hours remaining
before graduation.
10.10.3 Applicants must have a minimum unweighted grade point average (GPA) of 3.0.
10.10.4 Applicants must meet eligibility in one of three available categories:
10.10.4.1 High School Senior category will be a graduating student, not a spouse,
within the current school/award year from an accredited public, private or
home high school; or
10.10.4.2 Spouse category will be an undergraduate or graduate spouse at least one
full-time semester/quarter of credit hours remaining before graduation; or
10.10.4.3 Dependent non-spouse category will be a current undergraduate or graduate
with at least one full-time semester/quarter of credit hours remaining before
graduation and not eligible in another category.
10.10.5 Prior WPOSC scholarship award recipients are ineligible to apply.
10.11 Applicants ineligible to receive WPOSC scholarships:
10.11.1 Recipients of a “full” scholarship (e.g. tuition, fees, books, and room and board) from
another source.
10.11.2 Recipients of a U.S. service academy appointment.
10.11.3 Previous recipient of a WPOSC Scholarship.
10.12 Applications
10.12.1 Applications must be submitted to the scholarship chair at:

10.12.2 Applications must be submitted in PDF format.
10.12.3 Applications must be received no later than 11:59 PM Eastern Time (ET) on the
published deadline (February 25, 2022).
10.12.4 Official transcripts must be received directly from high school guidance offices or
universities registrar’s offices by 11:59 PM ET on the published deadline (February
25, 2022).
10.12.5 Late applications will not be considered, applicants will be notified via email.
10.12.6 Only complete applications received by the scholarship committee by the published
deadline (February 25, 2022) will be judged.
10.12.7 Applicants will receive written notification of non-selection.
